A Doula provides emotional and physical support for a birthing person, and also helps them in gathering evidence based information to make informed decisions.
Improved Health Outcomes for the Birthing Person & Baby!
Research has found that birthing people who worked with a Doula, led to increase bond between baby and birthing person. According to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), working with a Doula is associated with lower cesarean section rates, better APGAR scores for newborns and a higher birth satisfaction rate for birthing people. Additionally for people who want to deliver without pain medications, working with a Doula decreases the likelihood that a birthing person uses pain medications.
Continuity of Care
A Doula offers continuous care and labor support throughout the birthing experience. Especially for people who deliver in a hospital, a Doula can remain with a birthing person consistently throughout the experience, even among shift changes.
Physical, Emotional and Educational Support
These supports cannot be underestimated in a birthing experience!
A Doula provides physical, emotional and informational support to a birthing person, as well as their birth partner and support system. Physical support can look like hands-on comfort measures, coaching around movement and positions, massage, acupressure and more. Emotionally and informationally, the Doula serves as a reminder for the birthing person that they are supported, and able to advocate for their own bodily autonomy. As a non-medical person, the Doula can focus on emotional reassurance for the birthing person and their partner.
A Doula as part of your team!
A Doula is a supplemental member to your care team, in addition to your midwife/ doctor, your birthing partner, your family, etc. They play a distinct role and are there to support you AND your partner and family. Birth partners and family members cannot be replaced, especially their history and long term relationship with the birthing person. A Doula as an additional member to this team can be a person with past birthing experiences, a sense of calm, and allow people to participate in birth experiences as they feel able to.
